The White Company: Super Balm

The White Company has featured a few times on this blog but it has exclusively been about their candles. The White Company do create some of the most lovely home scents, with Wild Mint, White Tea and Peppermint being one of my all time favourite home scents. However not too long ago they launched a small range of skincare, which was received well by bloggers. Very kindly my best friend bought me the Super Balm for my birthday and i have been waiting to test it for myself. My beloved Liz Earle Hot Cloth Cleanser ran out not too long ago and i have been using this ever since.

Firstly let's talk about the range in general. The White Company have teamed up with Deciem to create this range. Deciem is all over the beauty world at the moment. Deciem considers itself 'the abnormal beauty company.' It started trading in 2013 which means they have had an astronomical rise in just 4 years. They now create/work with 10 different brands. On the website it says' Quality today means being authentic, being different, being functional, being beautiful and being sensibly priced.' Some of their most well known brands are The Ordinary, Niod and Hylamide. The Ordinary is known for its basic packaging, simple products and low price tag. I haven't tried any of the products but Fleur De Force speaks about them all of the time. I won't lie the products can sound very confusing and it does play more into the science of beauty. However the range created with The White Company has been kept very simple which appeals to me more. The collection is made up of 6 items; The Super Balm, Super Serum, the Hand Elixir, a Mosituriser, a Night Oil and a Eye Serum. It has all the basic necessitates for a skincare regime.

First of all the packaging is very in keeping with other White Company products; Simple, chic with a touch of class. The Super Balm is a gentle deep cleanser with a rather strange texture. I'm used to using a cream cleanser but previously i have used the Clinique Take The Day Off Balm which starts off solid but as it melts it becomes more of an oil. The Super Balm is already liquid and at first it feels like a lotion but as you rub it into the skin it becomes an oil. Once it has removed the make up, you take it off with a hot cloth and then it recommends removing the excess with cold water. I'm not sure about using cold water as companies tell you to do this to close the pores, i'm not about that life and always use hot water to allow my moisturiser to work. As it is an oil it is supposed to leave the skin with a glow and feeling very soft, which is true, it does. The White Company website explains a little bit more about the active ingredients used in the balm:

  • Plant esters: to gently cleanse skin, removing make-up and impurities
  • Corn humectants: to deeply hydrate and give skin a dewy finish
  • Emulsion system: to help purify skin and prevent blemishes

My skin is left feeling very soft once i have used this cleanser and it does remove all of my base make up. I tried it on my mascara and that didn't budge. I do use a lash primer which is hard to remove but this doesn't even touch it. I love this balm for the rest of my make up but i've had to buy an eye make up remover to use in conjunction with this balm. If you really work at it, you can use the Super Balm to remove eye make up but it takes a lot of work and it can leave your eyes feeling sore.

This is a scented product and the scent is very strong. When i first smelt it, i knew it was a lemon fragrance with a herbacious twist. It smells super fresh but i couldn't put my finger on what it reminded me of but i've worked out, it smells a bit like a lemon stuffing. Turns out the herb smell in the scent is Petitgrain which is the distillation of the twigs and leaves of the bitter orange tree. It does make you feel clean but i'm not sure if it smells too much like a cleansing product for your toilet. I don't mind the scent but i prefer the smell of Cleanse and Polish.

Overall i have really enjoyed using this balm, it is a gentle cleanser but gentle is the optimum word for it. If you use a lot of mascara, waterproof mascara or a primer then there is no way this is going to take it off. The texture of this cleanser is lovely and it does leave the skin feeling hydrated and soft. I'm not sure i would buy this again but i have really enjoyed using it. One problem i have with it, is that i can't use it as a all in one cleanser, i have to use a eye make up remover with it. Another problem with it comes with the packaging. Even though the white looks lovely it gets dirty and as you have to store it upside down the product can overfill into the screw cap. Other than it being slightly impractical i do love the look of the packaging. I do like this but i think the Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish is still my favourite. It has a similar feeling but it is cheaper. The Super Balm is £25 for 150ml which isn't cheap whilst Cleanse and Polish is £15 for 100ml. I will happily finish the Super Balm and if you are intrigued by it this is a good product. Don't expect it to take off your eye make up but it has a gentle cleansing effect. This makes me want to try more Deciem products so if you have any recommendations, tweet me @SophaaRambles
