Gem Gawking: Unusual and Famous Emeralds

Emeralds have been highly valued throughout history.  Appreciation of the stone can be traced back to the reign of ancient Egyptian queens and pharaohs.  Historians claim that Cleopatra has an especial liking for these precious stones.  Here's a look at some famous emerald that are not set in jewels but are valued for the stone alone.
The Mogul Emerald dates back to 1695 and it one of the largest emeralds ever recorded.  It measures 10 centimeters and weighs 217 carats.  What makes the Mogul unique among emeralds is the inscription found on its sides - on one side texts of prayer and the other flower-like designs.  It is a symbol of the great cultural, literary, and artistic achievements gained by India during the Mogul period, which also gave us the Taj Mahal.  The art of engraving emeralds and other precious stones was perfected to a high degree during this period.  The gem was sold for 2.2 million to an anonymous buyer in 2001.

The Devonshire Emerald, gets its name from the Duke of Devonshire, William Cavendish, who received the stone as a gift from the emperor of Portugal in 1831.  The stone is one of the finest and largest uncut emeralds in existence.  It is an exceptionally deep green emerald and weighs 1,383.95 carats.  The stone is kept at the Natural History Museum in London.
